Screw Mounting

What are screw mounting systems?

Screw mounting systems are professional fastening solutions that use screws to securely hang objects on walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. These systems consist of various components such as mounting plates, holders, and, of course, the screws themselves. The strength of screw fastening lies in the mechanical anchoring, where the screw grips the material. This ensures an extremely stable and durable connection suitable for both permanent and semi-permanent installations.

How does screw mounting work?

The principle of screw mounting is based on the screw thread gripping the base material. During insertion, the screw creates its own counter-mold in the material, resulting in a strong mechanical connection. The load-bearing capacity is determined by factors such as the screw diameter, the insertion length, and the type of substrate.

Technical aspects

• Drilling requirements : For hard materials such as concrete or stone, pre-drilling is necessary, while for soft materials such as wood or drywall, you can screw directly.
• Types of screws and their application : Wood screws for wooden surfaces, chipboard screws for sheet materials, concrete screws for masonry materials
• Suitable surfaces : Wood, plasterboard, concrete, masonry, metal, and plastic – each with specific screw types

Types of screw mounting systems

There is a wide variety of screw mounting systems. Wall rail systems use screws for the basic attachment of the rail, allowing for flexible suspension points. Direct screw fixings are ideal for fixed installations such as mirrors or heavy artwork. Adjustable screw hooks combine the sturdiness of screw mounting with flexibility in height adjustment. For ceiling systems, there are special ceiling screws with eyes that are perfect for suspended installations.

Specifications and features

For screw mounting systems, the technical specifications are crucial for proper operation:

• Screw length and thickness : Ranging from 20mm to 100mm in length and 3mm to 8mm in thickness, depending on the application.
• Screw material : Galvanized steel for indoor use, stainless steel for outdoor use or damp areas
• Load capacity and load tolerance : From 5kg for light applications to more than 50kg per attachment point
• Corrosion resistance and durability : Galvanized or stainless steel version for long-lasting protection

What should you look for when choosing a screw mounting system?

The choice of the right screw mounting system depends on several factors. The material of the surface determines the type of screw you need—a concrete screw for masonry walls or a wood screw for wooden structures. The weight of the object to be hung dictates the minimum screw diameter and the number of fastening points. Environmental conditions also play a role: in damp areas, corrosion-resistant screws are essential. Finally, the desired flexibility is important—do you opt for a fixed point or do you want to be able to adjust it later?

Assembly/installation

The installation of screw mounting systems requires care and the right approach. When screw mounting in wood , you can often screw directly without pre-drilling, especially with soft woods. For harder materials, a small pre-drill is recommended to prevent splitting.

When mounting in masonry materials such as concrete or brick, pre-drilling is always necessary. Use a masonry drill bit with the correct diameter – usually 1-2mm smaller than the plug diameter. The drilling depth should be approximately 10mm deeper than the plug length for optimal anchoring.

Steps for various assembly methods

For plasterboard walls, use special plasterboard anchors that spread behind the board. For hollow walls, hinged anchors or molly plugs are ideal because they distribute the load over a larger surface area.

For metal surfaces , use self-tapping screws or drill a hole first and use a metal drill bit. The screw diameter must match the drilled opening exactly for maximum strength.

Ceiling mounting requires extra attention to safety. Always use screws with the correct load capacity and consider double fastening for heavy objects. For concrete ceilings, expansion plugs with eye screws are a reliable choice.
